According to the present US legislation, all the people who legally work on the US territory and earn money have to pay monthly taxes. The 4 types of taxes that you are obliged to pay are: Federal Tax, State Tax, Social Security Tax, Medicare Tax. At the beginning of the next year, on the basis of W-2 forms, you receive from all the employers you worked for, and depending on the expenses you had (housing, transportation etc.) you can get back Federal Tax and State Tax.

The information bellow will help you to better understand what these taxes mean:

Federal Tax: are the taxes witheld from your monthly gross income for the country's budget.

State Tax: represent the taxes transferred to the account of the State you worked in; some states are exempt of collecting such taxes, for instance the State of Florida.

Social Security Tax: these taxes go to the funds allocated to retirement plans; if you reach the retirement age while in the USA and you have monthly contributed to the Social Security Taxes, you have the right to claim retirement allowance.

Medicare Tax: these taxes cover the medical assistance provided to the people who have no medical insurance at all.

Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax together are also known as FICA tax.

Students with J1 are exempt of Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax. If the employer still witholds these taxes, you have to inform him that you are exempt and you can show him the information on this website:
