FAQ Internship

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Do I have to pay any fee in order to get interns/trainees? No, there is no fees for host companies
  2. When is the best time to contact Mike’s Agency and ask for interns/trainees? We advise you to contact us at least 3 months before the requested start date; we want to make sure we find the right candidates for your business
  3. Do I need to conduct an interview with the participants? You can either let Mike’s Agency select the participants in consistency with your needs or interview them face-to-face, over phone or video conference with Skype.
  4. Will I be responsible for housing, meals and transportation? No, but it is advisable to make the job offer more attractive (housing provided at some cost, special price for meals within your company , free shuttle to workplace etc) so that more participants will want to work for you (let the best win!) and the more successful the program experience will be overall.
  5. What’s the stipend amount for an intern/trainee? Basically, it’s up to you. The monthly stipend must cover living costs (rent, food etc), usually it is around 1500$/month.
  6. My company needs a site visit from the visa sponsor. What do I need to prepare? Site visits are designed to ensure each host company is a legitimate company and that the basic hosting requirements as defined by the U.S. Department of State are met. During this visit, you must provide a copy of your workers’ compensation policy and some of your company’s marketing materials. You should also be prepared to give a quick tour of your company and answer any additional questions related to your training program.
  7. Does my intern/trainee have health insurance? Yes
  8. Does my intern/trainee qualify for a SSN? Yes
  9. Does my intern/trainee pay taxes? Yes, he/she is obliged to pay Federal and State taxes. As a J1 participant, he/she is exempt of FICA taxes.
  10. Can my intern/trainee work past the end date listed on the Training/Internship Placement plan? Yes, it is possible to extend the program, but you need to contact us to check if your intern/trainee is eligible for an extension.
  11. What happens if I’m not happy with my intern/trainee? You need to contact us and explain the problems. Mikes Agency will try to find a solution. If it still doesn’t work, you are allowed to terminate his/her program with suitable documentation.
  12. Why do I have to complete the host company evaluation forms? These forms are part of U.S. Department of State requirements and help us maintain program quality and demonstrate the benefit of the Exchange Visitor Program. They will also serve as documentation that the program was completed in good standing should your intern apply for another visa to the U.S. in the future.
